CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Johnston and Pineville-Matthews roads in south Charlotte, police said.

Francis Robert Male Jr., 57, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Elliott was wearing her seatbelt and showed no signs of impairment. The bicyclist was wearing a helmet, police said.

Detectives are investigating to determine if the traffic control signal was displaying red for the bicyclist or if he had the right of way, and if Elliott ran the red light.

Witnesses are asked to call detective Steve Williams at 704-432-2169.
