CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After tension and unrest, a charged year is now giving rise to understanding. People from different backgrounds are now reaching out and coming together for vital conversations.

Ericka Gibson took action and started a Facebook page to discuss tough topics in a safe environment. A powerful part of her effort is “Courageous Conversations,” which brings women together to have frank discussions.

“How can we begin to break down some of these barriers that we have between races?” Gibson said.

Participants Angela Willis and Tracy Barnett agreed to have their intimate talk recorded and shared publicly. At times, it was emotional.

“Get informed. Do the work. Have the conversations,” Barnett said. “Make it a point to interact with people who don’t look like you or live like or experience life in the same manner that you do.”

>> In the video at the top of the page, the women share their incredible journey and revelations about how a divided country can start to heal.
