Man charged after downtown Boone shooting leaves 1 hurt, police say

BOONE, N.C. — A man was arrested Saturday after he drove through downtown Boone firing a gun, hurting one person, police said.

The shooting happened just after 10 a.m. on W. King Street.

Two vehicles were struck during the shooting, and a passenger in one of those vehicles was grazed by a bullet and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Boone Police Department said.

Joseph James Navarette, 24, was taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to police.

Officers conducted a traffic stop after numerous 911 calls indicated the driver of a pickup truck was firing shots randomly from the vehicle, police said.

He was being held under a $1,000,000 secured bond and has an August 13 court date.

Authorities did not offer any comment on a possible motive or whether the victims were targeted.

Police said there was no threat to downtown Boone or the surrounding area. According to police, there was no threat to the Appalachian State University campus.

Police closed the streets in the area as they investigated what led up to the shooting.
