LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 68-year-old woman died in a Lancaster County house fire early Friday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the home just after 2 a.m. on South Potter Road, just south of Highway 9.

Several fire departments responded to the scene, and Lancaster County Fire Marshal and SLED are investigating.

Officials said a sheriff’s deputy tried to rescue the victim, Jean Lindsey, but smoke forced him back out of the house.

Fire crews were able to get the flames under control within an hour. Officials have not said how the fire started.
