CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a shooting that sent an east Charlotte man to the hospital early Monday morning may have been a case of mistaken identity.
The 32-year-old man told police he was standing on his porch on Montezuma Trail smoking a cigarette when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire.
"The next thing you know, shots start being fired at the residence, striking him a couple of times and also into the house," said Lt. Eric Brady of CMPD's Hickory Grove Division.
The victim was lucky -- none of the bullets did any severe damage, and he was treated at the hospital overnight and released. But Lt. Brady said the victim's girlfriend and infant daughter could have easily been hit also.
"One of those bullets went into a front bedroom where the victim's girlfriend and infant daughter (were)," he said.
Police said the couple had just moved into the house several weeks earlier, but someone had shot into the house more than a month ago.
They believe that Monday's shooting may have been intended for the people who were living in the house previously.
