Police: Fatigue of surgical resident possible factor in Thursday's fatal accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of a south Charlotte man killed in a crash on Rea Road Thursday said he was a hard-working Coca-Cola executive devoted to his family.

"The world has just lost a good one. And this family is left with an incredible void that cannot be filled," said Renee Miller, the victim's sister.

Edward Miller was driving home from work shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday when his car was hit head-on by a dump truck.

Police said another driver, Barry Davis, had crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the dump truck, causing it to swerve into the other lane and hit Miller's car.

He died at the scene.

Davis, a 35-year-old surgical resident at Carolinas Medical Center, had just finished a 12- or 13-hour shift, and fatigue may have been a factor, police said.

They do not believe speed or alcohol played a part.

Officials at CMC said they could not release information on the hours Davis worked.

On Friday night, Davis’ wife said her husband did not want to make a comment on the accident.

Police charged Davis with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Miller's family said they want to learn more about what caused the crash.

For now, they are still in shock that he is gone.

"His daughter's going to be graduating from Stanford next year, and he won't be there," Renee Miller said.
