SHELBY, N.C. — Police in Shelby were investigating a homicide at a motel early Monday morning.

Just before 4:30 a.m. the Shelby Police Department received a 911 call about a shooting at the Super 8 on East Dixon Blvd.

When officers arrived they found a man in room 218 who had been shot. The room is on the second floor, closest to the hotel office.

Paramedics pronounced Travis Wallace, 35, of Gaffney dead at the scene. Wallace was the father of twin 7-year-old girls.

Police also spent time looking in room 216, on the other side of the building. Officers also went door-to-door asking guests if they saw or heard anything ususual.

A close friend said Wallace wasn't acting right and could tell something was wrong when she visited him at his hotel room Sunday night.

"He didn't deserve this you know, by no means," Shannon Butler said.

She said Wallace didn't like guns but on Sunday night, he posted a Facebook picture holding one.

Butler believes he was afraid of someone who eventually killed him.

“They (are) going to get what they deserve, you know,” Butler said. “I mean, we (are not) going to let it go."

"Oh my goodness,” guest Susie Lowndes said. “It's just making me feel so sick you know. It means that there is some person around here that's done dreadful things and it's making me feel awful."

Police said they have spoken with some people they consider witnesses. No suspects were mentioned.
