CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wadesboro police are searching for a killer after two innocent men were gunned down.

"Heartbroken, that was my dad," Tawaini Holt told Channel 9.

Her family and the community is grieving the crime they call senseless and heartless.

“I heard about four or five gunshots and I grabbed my son and we got on the floor,” said Krystal Wall, who lives next door to where the shots were fired.

One of those bullets hit and killed 60-year-old Wallace Sturdivant.

His family said he was an Army veteran who had two children and four grandchildren. They said he’d been battling kidney failure.

"I wish that would've took him instead of a stray bullet," his daughter Tawaini Holt said.

Police said Sturdivant was outside with a friend near Highway 74 around 9 p.m. Tuesday when a man in his 20’s ran by and someone started firing.

Witnesses said the shooter was targeting the young man, but the two older men were hit by stray bullets as they tried to run away.

“It wasn’t worth it man,” neighbor Gabriel White said. “Two people lost their lives just going about their everyday living.”

At last check, the other man shot was in critical condition at the hospital.

The police chief told Channel 9 investigators are still trying to figure out who the killer is and why they were after the man in his 20’s.

Sturdivant’s family wants answers too and hopes they’ll get justice as they cope with losing an innocent loved one.

"[He] didn't have nothing to do with this. It's not right. It's so wrong. It's so wrong," Holt said.

Investigators are checking surveillance cameras at a nearby convenience store to see if they can provide more answers.

A nearby floral shop has a black wreath hanging on the door Sturdivant’s nickname.
