CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said two officers were assaulted Wednesday afternoon while responding to a disturbance call in southeast Charlotte.

Police responded to a domestic violence call along the 8700 block of Idlewild Road, and said John Sowell, 18, assaulted a woman and after that, he assaulted the officers, officials said.

He came out on his own after talking with negotiators on the phone.

Sowell fled and officers chased him before he barricaded himself inside a family home.

Sowell's mother said she praised officers for their work because it ended peacefully and safely.

Both officers are expected to be OK.

Officials said Sowell was charged with two counts of assaulting a government official.
