CMPD: Man opened fire on officer in northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Law enforcement officials are searching for the person they said opened fire on a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in northeast Charlotte early Monday morning.

Police told Channel 9 that around 1 a.m. an officer responded to a call of an armed suspect at the Phillips Mallard Creek Apartments off West Mallard Creek Road. As the officer responded, officials said he encountered the suspect on West Mallard Creek near Berkeley Place Drive.

While the officer was still inside his cruiser, police said that suspect fired a shot at him.

Police said the bullet missed and that nobody was hurt. The officer did not return fire.

K-9s were brought to the scene and a search was conducted, but the gunman -- who police described as a teenage African-American -- was not found.

Police released surveillance photo of the man who they are looking for.

Police are asking anyone who may know anything to call Crimestoppers at (704)334-1600.
