CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police patrolled a vigil Friday night in Grier Heights after a similar prayer vigil ended with shots fired Thursday night at 28th Street and Pinckney Avenue in the Villa Heights neighborhood. Four people are recovering from gunshot wounds, including an 11-year-old boy.

Community residents still showed for the Mothers Against Murdered Offspring vigil and took a stand against violence.

"I'm sometimes scared to come outside 'cause you never know what will happen," resident Tamara Johnson said.

Some mothers Eyewitness News spoke with were frightened that there would be more violence after a weeklong spike in shootings.

"I was, 'cause it had happened yesterday," Johnson said. "Somebody, one of the kids, got shot. And I just want it to stop."

The vigil in Grier Heights was for James Lockhart, who was killed Sunday night.  A visible police presence calmed people worried about another attack. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police
