Police say driver was speeding before deadly west Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE — Police were investigating a crash that killed one person in west Charlotte over the weekend.

The single-car wreck happened just before 1 p.m. Sunday on Old Steele Creek Road, near Wilkinson Boulevard.

It was not known if Petty was impaired, but toxicology results are pending. The investigation into the crash is active and ongoing.

When officers arrived, they found a heavily damaged Hyundai Genesis sedan that had run off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole and several trees. The driver, 71-year-old Curtis Petty, was the only person in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Petty, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was speeding before the crash.
