Armed robbery suspect arrested after high-speed chase

CHARLOTTE — A man was arrested Thursday morning after an armed robbery at a Belmont Lowe’s led to a high-speed vehicle pursuit and a collision with a garbage truck. Reginald Cannon, 48, was taken into custody after the chase ended near the interchange of Interstate 85 and Interstate 485 in Mecklenburg County.

Officers with the Belmont Police Department responded to the retail store at 200 Caldwell Farm Road around 7 a.m. following reports of a robbery. Investigators determined a suspect had robbed a victim at gunpoint, stealing a cellphone and wallet before initially fleeing on foot. A K-9 unit from the Gastonia Police Department was called to the scene to assist in the search.

During the investigation, officers identified the suspect as Reginald Cannon and linked him to a green Dodge Charger. While police remained at the Lowe’s location, Cannon returned to the area in that vehicle.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Caldwell Farm Road, but Cannon fled at a high rate of speed and entered Interstate 85 northbound toward Charlotte.

The vehicle pursuit continued from Belmont into Mecklenburg County. Near the interchange of Interstate 85 and Interstate 485, Cannon’s vehicle collided with a parked garbage truck on the shoulder of the highway.

The collision disabled the Dodge Charger, and Cannon attempted to flee the scene on foot.

Cannon was apprehended a short time later along Interstate 485.

The Belmont Police Department was assisted in the foot pursuit and arrest by the Mount Holly Police Department.

Following his arrest, Cannon was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.

Cannon is currently in the custody of the Belmont Police Department. He faces charges of armed robbery, felony possession of a firearm, felony flee to elude and multiple traffic offenses.

Belmont Police confirmed that all items taken during the initial robbery were recovered and returned to the victim.

The incident and subsequent investigation caused significant traffic delays on Thursday morning along Interstate 85.

The scene was cleared, and all lanes were reopened by approximately 11:15 a.m. The Belmont Police Department stated that the case remains an active investigation.
