CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police’s K-9 unit helped take a man into custody after a chase that went from west to north Charlotte, according to police.

Howard L. Watson,  46,  jumped out of a pickup truck around Rodey Avenue, and was captured a short time later around Atando Avenue near Druid Hill Academy.

Police said the pickup truck involved in the chase is the same one that was stolen Sunday night while children were still inside the vehicle.

Police said a couple went inside the QuikTrip Express on Clanton Road Sunday and left the truck running with their 9- and 13-year-old sons inside when a man jumped into the truck and fled.

Officers said the 9-year-old immediately jumped out of the truck and the 13-year-old jumped out a short time later.

Police haven’t said if the man who was taken into custody is the same suspect who they believe stole the truck.

Channel 9 is contacting police to find out more about the suspect.
