The Political Beat Candidate Guide: U.S. House of Representatives District 5

District 5 includes Alexander, Caldwell, Watauga, and Ashe counties in the United States House of Representatives.

Republican candidate Virginia Foxx is running to maintain the spot she has held since 2005.

This election cycle, Foxx is facing Democrat Chuck Hubbard.

Foxx did not respond to our candidate guide questionnaire.

We will update this page with her answers if we receive them.

Chuck Hubbard (D)

Why are you running?

I spent 40 years as a newspaper reporter and publisher in Wilkes County. For the last 20 years, I’ve seen Virginia Foxx harm our community by tearing down public education and workplace protections as Chair of the Committee of Education and the Workforce, and now as Rules Committee Chair leading the charge in favor of corporations and against working people — and fighting against releasing the full Epstein files.

Foxx’s voting record speaks for itself: she continues to vote against the best interests of the district she is supposed to represent. She won’t even come home to do a town hall.

Rising costs are out of control. Government shutdowns are becoming a regular occurrence. Corruption is running rampant. There’s no accountability in Washington. I couldn’t sit back and watch this happen any longer. My intimate knowledge of this district and its struggles positions me to represent my community in a completely different way, and I know that the people of this district are ready for some change.

Is it time for the Iran war to end?

Yes, this war with Iran needs to end because it’s costing the working families of the Fifth District too much. The war is driving up grocery and gas costs, causing families and small businesses to suffer. This isn’t a war that should’ve been started and when the American people loudly spoke out against it, efforts should’ve been made to end it quickly. We’re unnecessarily putting our soldiers’ lives on the line and it’s costing us too much. It’s time to end it.

What legislation will you pursue to bring down costs?

I plan to bring down costs by supporting a full stop to the war in Iran and pressuring Trump to eliminate the tariffs that are harming our economy. My goal isn’t just to bring down costs but also to build infrastructure that will help alleviate financial stress. That starts with ensuring jobs are available and offer a livable wage. In Congress, I will support bills like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which has helped North Carolina receive investment funds that created jobs across the counties in the 5th district. Creating quality, livable-wage jobs will be a priority so people can afford housing, groceries, health care, and childcare without sacrifice.

How would you assess President Donald Trump’s second term so far?

President Trump’s second term is costing the American people millions. Unfortunately, my opponent hasn’t stood up against him or spoken up for folks here in the Fifth District, which is disappointing. Throughout this second term we’ve faced rising costs, an unnecessary war, and corruption. The people who could have put their constituents first instead backed Trump and pushed through bills like the Big Beautiful Bill which would directly harm millions.

What sets you apart from your opponents?

My opponent is best known for several reasons, including her vicious letter to a 4th grader, yelling at a reporter, blocking the release of the Epstein Files five times, and it gets worse. Virginia Foxx pushed through the Big Beautiful Bill at 1 AM, which is directly responsible for millions losing their healthcare. She is notorious for lacking support for FEMA funding and for her unwillingness to hold Republicans accountable.

On the other hand, I’m ready to go to Washington to fight for the working class, fight back against corruption, and work for you. We need someone in Congress who believes in transparency and returning integrity to this position. I think that largely sets me apart from my opponent.
