Woman crossing street hit, killed by SUV in east Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE — Police are investigating after a woman was hit and killed by an SUV in east Charlotte Monday night.

It happened just before 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and Carolyn Drive.

Officers said the driver of the Chevrolet was not hurt in the crash and stayed at the scene.

When officers got to the area, they found a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a pedestrian who had been involved in the crash. The pedestrian, later identified as 64-year-old Rovella Doreen-Harris Evans, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives learned that the SUV was heading east on Central Avenue when it hit Evans, who was not in a marked crosswalk.

After the collision, the driver of the SUV was screened for impairment and was found to not be impaired. Police said speed was also not a contributing factor.

No other information has been released.
