BOONE, N.C. — A man walking his dog discovered what appeared to be a human skull Friday near Winkler Creek in Boone, according to a release from the Boone Police Department.

Police said it was found in an area adjacent to the Town of Boone water intake.

The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office joined police to begin an investigation. Around three dozen officials returned Tuesday to search the area again and found no additional remains.

The skull has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further testing and identification.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty spoke with several people who live in the area, including Appalachian State students, who say it’s a popular spot for recreation.

“There’s always a bunch of people out there swimming,” Alex Quin, a student, said. “There’s a rope swing, and it’s a pretty popular spot, so it’s insane to think that there’s human remains right there.”

Police have not yet determined if the skull belonged to a man or a woman. They also haven’t said how long the person may have been there.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
