CHARLOTTE — A brand of cinnamon that was sold in North Carolina has been recalled due to potential lead contamination.
SLR Food Distribution Inc. announced the recall after routine sampling identified elevated levels of the heavy metal in the product.
It affects cinnamon sold under the “Wise Wife” brand. The recalled spice was distributed to grocery and retail stores across 14 states, including North Carolina, between Sept. 8, 2025 and June 28, 2026.
The recalled product is sold in a 110-gram (3.88-ounce) clear plastic container featuring a black screw-top cap. The product bears UPC 0688474302754 on its back label and lists a Best Before date of April 25, 2027.
The recall was initiated after product samples collected and analyzed by The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station revealed elevated lead levels. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall to date.
Health officials warn that while short-term exposure to low levels of lead may show no apparent symptoms other than increased blood lead levels, higher or prolonged exposure can cause serious health impacts. In children, long-term exposure can damage the central nervous system, leading to learning disorders and developmental defects.
SLR Food Distribution Inc. has directed store owners and distributors to immediately stop sales and remove the affected product from store shelves. Retailers are instructed to hold remaining inventory and follow company recall procedures.
“Consumers should not consume the recalled product and should either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the company said.
