Shootout near South End park forces nearby school into lockdown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said they are investigating a shootout that happened near a park in South End Monday afternoon.

This comes just days after an innocent bystander was killed when she drove into the crossfire of a different shootout in north Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they responded to a call from someone who reported that shots were fired on Fairwood Avenue off South Tryon Street in southwest Charlotte.

Officers said two groups started firing at each other near Southside Homes in South End.

Police canvassed the area for the suspects. Officials said Marie G, Davis Middle School, which is nearby, was placed on lockdown.

No injuries were reported, but a home was shot into.

One neighbor said she was worried another innocent person would get hurt.

"These kids need to be kids and stop thinking a gun is part of their problems. People can get killed just like the young lady that was killed last week just driving," the neighbor said. "It's ridiculous you have to run for your life because bullets are flying."

Apartment management sent the following statement:

"We regret this incident happened on our property and are doing everything we can to ensure this type of incident doesn’t happen again, including evaluating our own security procedures and continuing to work with authorities during their investigation.

"We have also communicated what details we know to all our residents as well as advised them on steps they can take to help ensure their own safety."

No arrests have been made.

No further information has been released.
