STATESVILLE, N.C. — One retired teacher is still making an impact on people from a chair in her living room in Statesville.
Ninety-six-year-old Vera Webster crochets blankets, shawls and various items for cancer patients at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
She said it satisfies her and through the good Lord she can do it.
Webster said she started arts and crafts at an early age and learned how to crochet by watching her mother.
According to the Iredell Memorial Hospital, the blankets are available for people going through cancer treatment, or any patient in the hospital who could use one.
Webster said after her husband passed away, she and her friend Norma Dearman needed something to do, so they became volunteers at the Iredell Memorial Hospital in 1996.
Webster said she and Dearman taught together at Statesville High School. Webster retired after spending 48 years in the classroom.
According to the Iredell Memorial Hospital, the excess blankets and shawls Webster makes are given to people in the community.
The hospital said some Statesville firefighters have given blankets to people they meet while on duty.
Webster said she loves what she does and feels she can still be helpful to someone.
