Rock Hill's 'Freedom Walkway' will honor Friendship 9

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The city of Rock Hill will officially dedicate the Freedom Walkway to The Friendship 9 on Monday.

The walkway recognizes local heroes who have fought for our freedom in the United States.

Officials will start the dedication at 4 p.m. at the Palmetto Room at Historic Old Town.

The men who became known as the Friendship 9 were arrested in 1961 after they sat at a whites-only lunch counter in Rock Hill.

They spent 30 days in jail instead of paying a $100 fine.

Last year, the nine were officially pardoned.
