Rotary revs up for road rally

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Reigning champions Daniel and Stephanie Richart of Mooresville will be looking for challengers to their title at Saturday’s annual Lake Norman Road Rally.

The husband and wife team, along with out-of-town friend Sandi Vinson, took the first place title at last year’s rally and tied for fourth place the year before.

Sponsored by the Top of the Lake Rotary Club, the third annual Lake Norman Road Rally scavenger hunt charity event will be held Saturday at JR Motorsports in theTalbertPointeBusinessPark.

“We’re hoping to win again this year,” said Stephanie Richart, secretary of the Rotary club. “It’s a fun event that helps to raise money for our club and the charity it supports.”

Festivities begin at 12:30 p.m., with the first cars released onto the road course at 2 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin about 5 p.m.

The public is invited to enter. The fee is $50 per car and each car must have a driver and a navigator. Road Rally participants will be provided with a "route" outline and will have to solve clues along the way.

“You learn a lot about Mooresville -- taking the “scenic route” -- through this scavenger hunt on wheels,” Richart said.

This event, which is more like the old scavenger hunt than a street race, mandates driving at legal speeds and abiding by all laws, so any vehicle can be used.

Participants in mini-vans and SUVs may have an advantage if they bring a car full of passengers because they will have more people to help with the clues.

Winners are determined by mileage, answers to questions and by the length of time to complete the course.

The annual “scavenger hunt on wheels” has become a popular way to navigate a 40-mile course with family, friends and fellow car enthusiasts to win prizes. Driving teams compete for a $250 First Prize and $100 Second Prize. Each registered vehicle will receive two JR Motorsports logoed gift bags, plus two soft drink and two food item tokens.

Last year’s event raised more than $3,000, which supports Rotary’s worldwide mission to eradicate polio. In addition, the Rotary Club of Top of theLakelocally supports the Mooresville Health Reach Community Clinic, Mooresville Soup Kitchen and S.C.A.N. (Stop Child Abuse Now).

The public is invited to attend, and participants will line their cars up at 1:30 p.m. for the scavenger hunt’s start time at 2 p.m. Space is limited to 50 cars, on a first-come basis, but people can still register the day of the event.
