Sam Wilson Road over I-85 to close for about a year

CHARLOTTE — A major access point to I-85 in west Charlotte will close for about a year as crews begin the next phase of the I-485/I-85 improvement project.

Sam Wilson Road will close over I-85 starting Monday, Sept. 21. The closure is part of a project designed to improve traffic flow through one of the region’s busiest interchanges.

The first phase will include construction of a new bridge on Sam Wilson Road over a future collector road. That roadway will carry traffic from the I-485 off-ramp to I-85 South.

Other improvements include:

  • Widening the existing bridge carrying traffic from the I-485 off-ramp to I-85 South.
  • Building a new roadway along I-85 South to carry I-485 off-ramp traffic.
  • Building a new Sam Wilson Road bridge over the new roadway.
  • Relocating the existing Sam Wilson Road ramp to I-85.

The work is expected to improve access and reduce congestion in the area once the project is complete.
