NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A North Charleston police officer was fired after posting a photo of himself wearing Confederate flag boxer shorts on Facebook.
Chief Eddie Driggers said Wednesday the photo undermines Sgt. Shannon Dildine's ability to instill trust and confidence when working with citizens.
"Your [Dildine's] posting in this manner led to you being publicly identified as a North Charleston police officer and associated both you and the department with an image that symbolizes hate and oppression to a significant portion of the citizens we are sworn to serve," Driggers wrote in Dildine's termination letter.
Driggers said defense attorneys could use the photo to question Dildine's motivation in arresting minorities.
Dildine had 10 days as of Wednesday to appeal the termination.
