Second Harvest to distribute 100,000 pounds of food in honor of Anne Springs Close

CHARLOTTE — Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will distribute more than 100,000 pounds of food across parts of the Carolinas in November and December in honor of the late philanthropist Anne Springs Close.

The effort marks the sixth consecutive year the food bank has honored Close, whose family foundation has supported its work for decades.

The Springs Close Foundation, under Close’s leadership and that of her children, helped establish senior food box and backpack programs in York, Lancaster and Chester counties.

Since 2005, the foundation and Close’s children have donated more than $3.5 million to support Second Harvest’s efforts to fight hunger among children and seniors.

“Anne was my hero and set an example we should all follow in showing love and compassion for our neighbors in need,” said Kay Carter, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “We could think of no better tribute to her than distributing fresh produce and staple foods to seniors and children in her beloved Fort Mill and beyond.”

The planned food distributions include:

  • Nov. 24: Fort Mill Community Food Distribution at Fort Mill Middle School
  • Dec. 7: The Pilgrim’s Inn in Rock Hill
  • Dec. 11: Location to be determined
  • Dec. 16: Christian Services in Lancaster
  • Dec. 22: Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen in Rock Hill

The food bank said the distributions will benefit partner agencies and communities throughout the Springs Close Foundation’s service area.
