CHARLOTTE — A 33-year-old man died early Thursday morning while in custody of the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
The sheriff’s office says Domonique Chrisholm experienced a medical emergency and became unresponsive around 11:30 Wednesday night. Deputies say lifesaving measures were taken and continued until emergency crews arrived to take him to the hospital.
Despite those efforts, Chrisholm was pronounced dead around 12:30 a.m.
Chisholm was taken into custody April 20.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with the State Bureau of Investigation as they look into this case.
The cause of death has yet to be determined.
This marks the second in-custody death in Mecklenburg County in less than a week.
Over the weekend, 59-year-old Todd Williams died after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the same jail Saturday morning. He had been housed at the detention center for less than a week.
The SBI is also investigating his death.
In a release, Sheriff Garry McFadden expressed condolences to the families.
“As the largest Sheriff’s Offices in the Carolinas face these difficult challenges every day, we are entrusted with caring for individuals who often arrive with significant physical and mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and other complex medical needs, while operating in an overcrowded detention center,” he wrote. “These realities require constant vigilance, compassion, and collaboration with our medical partners. Although we cannot always prevent every tragedy, we remain committed to providing appropriate care, maintaining transparency, and continuously working to improve the health and safety of everyone in our custody.”
