CHARLOTTE — A driver died after his speeding car ran off the road in northeast Charlotte last week, police said.

Eastway Drive was closed near North Tryon Street at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday for the crash.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Luis Adrian Garcia, 34, was driving around 10:15 p.m. that day in a Nissan Rogue. Police said he was speeding while heading north on Eastway Drive when he swerved out of his lane and veered off the side of the road. Investigators said the SUV then went airborne and hit a sign.

Channel 9 got to the scene and saw the SUV flipped upside down off the side of the road.

Garcia died at the scene, first responders said.

Investigators said they believe Garcia’s speed and impairment led up to the crash.

By 11 p.m., the southbound lanes of Eastway Drive were reopened.
