Teen charged with DWI after violent crash sends 3 to the hospital

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police had to close down a busy east Charlotte road after a violent crash involving an alleged drunk driver sent three people to the hospital early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the 2-car crash on North Sharon Amity Road and Vernedale Road around 4 a.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told Channel 9 that 17-year-old Jesus Sanchez was driving a Ford F250 and was speeding when he ran the red light on North Sharon Amity Road and struck a Pontiac sedan.

Officers said three people were in the Pontiac, and that two of them were trapped.

The female driver of the Pontiac suffered life-threatening injuries, while her two passengers were also rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, one with serious injuries and the other with non life-threatening injuries.

Sanchez has been charged with DWI, consuming alcohol under 21, felony hit-and-run, no operators license and felony serious injury by vehicle.

The intersection was blocked off all morning with crime tape while officers investigated.

A witness on the scene told Channel 9 that a truck was speeding when it collided with the car. That witness also said that there were two children inside the car that were taken to the hospital.
