CHARLOTTE — Six local stores are in trouble for overcharging customers at the cash register.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services released its latest inspection report on Friday, about the difference between prices on store shelves and charges when customers check out.
The stores included:
- Family Dollar on Old Statesville Road in Charlotte.
- Circle K on Mint Hill Road in Matthews.
- Family Dollar on East Caswell Rd in Wadesboro.
- Dollar General on North Salisbury Ave. in Spencer.
- Dollar General on Hwy 740 in Badin.
- Family Dollar on N. Main St. in Norwood.
The stores will now be reinspected, and will be ordered to pay fines.
A total of 70 stores in North Carolina were included in the third-quarter report and will also have to pay fines.
“Our Standards Division continues to see a significant increase in stores with price scanner errors, as many stores continue to deal with staffing shortages. Overcharges cost consumers so we remain vigilant in inspecting stores in order to protect consumers,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.
“During the holidays especially every penny counts, and we want consumers to pay attention during check out. Over the last year we have seen about 26 percent of price scanner inspections fail. It is always a good practice for consumers to check their receipts as well as the price on the shelf to make sure that they are paying the correct amount and alert managers if they are not correct.”
In August, Channel 9 reported on several other Charlotte area stores that had also overcharged customers, including Target and Walmart stores. The agency stated that 61 North Carolina stores were ordered to pay fines for price-scanning errors in 32 counties.
In July, several Dollar General and Walmart stores in Iredell and Union counties were accused of overcharging customers.
