CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ahead of the Democratic National Convention, several hotels in the Charlotte region are stepping up inspections for bedbugs, and they're doing it with dogs.
Killingsworth Pest Control takes specially-trained dogs to more than half a dozen hotels in the Charlotte region on a regular basis. The dogs were certified as puppies to hunt for the tiny insects, and the company said they have an accuracy rate of 97 percent.
"They're just looking for an aroma," dog handler Andrew Rogers said.
With the DNC months away, several hotels, including the Country Inn and Suites in Matthews, are not taking any chances. The hotel has never had issues with bedbugs, and wants to keep it that way.
"It gives you peace of mind. I can leave here every night knowing that my hotel's clean, bedbug-free, and it's because of those amazing little dogs," General Manager Casey Cook said.
