Spilled milk shuts down I-40 West in McDowell County

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A tractor-trailer carrying milk crashed off the road and shut down Interstate 40 west Thursday morning in McDowell County.

It happed just before 5 a.m. Troopers say the tanker disconnected from the power unit and crashed near the Burke County line at Dysartsville Road. It overturned, spilling its contents into Muddy Creek.

As of 8:25 a.m., one lane had been reopened between mile markers 92 and 93. Emergency crews from multiple counties, as well as the North Carolina Regional Hazmat Team, are still working to contain the spill.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Officials say the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is also responding to assist with environmental impact mitigation.
