CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Garinger High School student whose family overcame violence and death threats in Sudan is now receiving a special honor.

Adior Barac's parents were both teachers in Sudan.

Her father was arrested after standing up to Sudan’s rebel army when it started burning Catholic churches and schools.

Her teachers said her parents' fight for justice has clearly made a mark on her, citing her work ethic and leadership skills.

She's been chosen to receive a full scholarship.

“I’m excited because I know money is like, really tight for me and my family, so this just gives us an opportunity not to worry about it as much,” Barac said.

Adior will go to Appalachian State University to major in biology and perhaps medicine.
