North Carolinians scored slightly higher, with 39 percent.

On average, 36 percent of participants passed the test nationwide.

Researchers used a 20-question multiple choice quiz with questions taken from the actual U.S. Citizenship Test, and only two percent of South Carolina residents received A's.

"Passing" the test requires getting above 60%, or a D.
