CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives in the University City Division are investigating a car that was broken into Monday off Steeleton Way.

Todd Robert Wyatt, also known as T.Rob, shared with Channel 9 surveillance video of the burglars. There was one woman and three other people shown sneaking onto his property.

The doors of Wyatt's Ford Focus were unlocked.

The thieves were unable to get into his truck because doors were locked.

It only took the burglars a minute to go through the truck, but only got away with loose change.

"I feel a little violated, but I can't be too terribly upset. If you leave your car door open, someone will open the door and look inside," Wyatt told reporter Gina Esposito in an interview.

Detectives in the University Division are reviewing the video to see if they can track down any leads on the thieves.

A recent Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report reveals vehicle thefts citywide are up nearly 18 percent, compared to the same time last year. Capt. Brian Foley said extra patrols are working to cut down on these types of crimes, but neighbors need to play a role too. In more than half of the reported break-ins, cars were unlocked.

"The solution to this problem is to lock your car. We encourage you to remove valuables," Foley said.

No arrests have been made in the case. If you have any information that can help police, contact the division or Crime Stoppers.
