CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in southwest Charlotte early Sunday morning.
It happened around 3:30 a.m. at a gas station on Steele Creek Road, near the Charlotte Premium Outlets.
When officers got to the area, they encountered a robbery suspect. That suspect, identified as Jemario Baldwin, started firing shots at the police. According to CMPD, Officer Samantha Thompson returned fire.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Baldwin then got in a car and sped away, leading offices on a chase which ended when he crashed into a utility pole on South Tryon Street and Tremont Street near uptown.
Police said when they tried to take Baldwin into custody, they discovered he had been shot.
MEDIC took him to the hospital, where he was being treated for the gunshot wound and for injuries from the crash. Police said he will survive and will charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, first-degree kidnapping, two counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and felony fleeing to elude in a motor vehicle.
Thompson, who was hired by CMPD on Oct. 15, 2012, was placed on paid administrative leave and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the case, which is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.
