CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Students at Claremont Elementary School in Catawba County were evacuated Thursday morning after a suspicious device was found behind the school, police said.
The Gaston County bomb squad was brought in to investigate the suspicious device that was found near a portable classroom. Authorities determined that the device, which looked like a pipe, was not dangerous.

Police said the device was found before school started and diverted buses and students away.
Officers said students were taken to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church on West Main Street near the school. After authorities determined the device was safe, students were taken back to class.
