ROCKWELL, N.C. — Rowan County deputies say they arrested a 16-year-old after an armed robbery Wednesday morning in Rockwell.
The teen is facing charges of robbery with a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Deputies responded around 9:35 a.m. to reports of a shooting in the parking lot of Restoration Church at the intersection of Cannon Street and Cal Miller Road.
Investigators determined the victim arranged to meet the teen in the church parking lot. During the meeting, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and robbed the victim, striking them in the head with the gun and firing at least one shot. The bullet didn’t hit anyone, but the blow to the head caused serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
The victim then ran to a nearby property to report the incident to police. Rowan County EMS then took them to the hospital for treatment.
Detectives with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect and obtained a search warrant for his residence in Cabarrus County. Deputies found the teen with assistance from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office and arrested him after they say he tried to run away.
He is being held at the Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center.
Deputies say the investigation into this case remains active. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the sheriff’s department.
