ROCK HILL, S.C. — A teenager who raped a Winthrop University student at gunpoint near the campus in February 2019 and then stole her SUV was sentenced to 60 years in prison on Monday.
Terry Shaimek Tyler, who was 16 at the time of the crime, was charged as an adult in the rape that happened at Campus Walk Apartments on Rose Street.
Tyler approached the 21-year-old victim as she walked toward her apartment, investigators said. That’s when he pulled a gun, sexually assaulted her, and stole her SUV.
Police later found that stolen SUV and arrested Tyler.
Tyler pleaded guilty to rape, armed robbery and kidnapping.
He was sentenced to 60 years total.
The sentence consists of 30 years for first-degree criminal sexual conduct and a consecutive 30 years for armed robbery. Tyler’s sentences for kidnapping, grand larceny, unlawful possession of a pistol, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime run will be concurrent to his previous sentence.
The apartments where the crime happened are not run by Winthrop, but are for students to live in.
