GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Police are still looking for the person who broke into a family’s Gaston County home on Monday while their teenage son was home.
The burglar probably saw that there were no cars in the driveway and thought the parents were at work and the four children were at school, police said.
It appears that the intruder didn't know that students had only a half-day of school.
"It was kind of shocking that I didn't know who was in my house,” Yero Love, 16, said. “I didn't know who was in my house, what they were doing."
Love was asleep just before 9 a.m. Monday when someone kicked open the back door of his family's home off of Shannon Bradley Road.
“Both cars were gone and they probably watched our routine or something," Love said.
Love slept in the lower level while the burglar went from room to room, passing his locked door. He heard a noise upstairs and came out, expecting to see one of his parents.
"I was right here and he was right there," Love said.
The masked burglar came downstairs holding a bag of stolen items.
The teen didn't realize that something was wrong until he came face-to-face with the intruder.
"I didn't know what was going on. I was like, ‘No one is supposed to be in my house,’" Love said.
He couldn’t tell if the person was a man or a woman.
"All I could see was their eyes,” Love said. "Their eyes were wide open. They looked right at me."
The intruder fled and Love did not chase the robber. He went to a neighbor’s home and called 911.
Police found two bags full of items collected by the burglar, who left the scene empty-handed.
Love and his mother are looking into better security at their home after the incident.
