CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A Chester County woman said she had to hide in her closet as someone broke into her home over the weekend.

She told police she could hear a voice inside her house as she dialed 911.

Channel 9’s Hannah Goetz sat down with Diane Simpson on Monday as she walked through the terrifying moments. Goetz obtained a recording of Simpson’s chilling 911 call, which she thought would be her last.

“Somebody is breaking into my house. They’re men,” she says in the call.

Then -- “I’m in the closet right now. Please hurry, please hurry.”

Simpson can be heard whispering to dispatchers while hiding in her closet, praying whoever broke into her home didn’t find her.

“He broke out these two windows, but what woke me was he kept yelling ‘get the brick, get the brick,’” she said. “I immediately heard glass falling and the door open.”

Simpson was asleep in her bed, alone for the night while her husband was out of town. Police believe James Boatwright broke into her home around 4:30 a.m. Saturday and went into her kitchen to grab knives.

“He came in here, knocked this over and took the two biggest butcher knives out of it,” Simpson explained.

That’s when she jumped out of bed and made the 911 call.

“They’re coming, they’re coming to the bedroom, they’re in the bedroom,” you can hear her say, then, ”Please hurry.”

“What was going through your mind?” Goetz asked her.

“I’m going to die, I’m going to die,” Simpson said.

Nearby, Chester County deputies were in the woods on another call looking for a suspect that they believe could have been Boatwright, so they got to Simpson’s house in minutes. The incident report says Boatwright came out of the front door with two knives, and police were able to take him into custody before clearing the home.

Simpson went by the sheriff’s office Monday to thank those who helped her.

“They’re working harder than ever for them to continue to respond the way that they do,” said Londa Pringle, who’s with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office. “It makes us super, super proud to have them on our team.”

Simpson said it’s good to know local law enforcement will be there quickly to protect her, but she likely won’t stay in her home alone again.

Boatwright is charged with first-degree burglary.
