CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands of people across the Charlotte region were without power Wednesday morning after strong, gusty winds blew through the Carolinas overnight.

By 6 a.m., more than 1,200 Duke Energy customers were in the dark, with a majority of those outages in east Charlotte near The Plaza and Shannonhouse Drive.
The Mecklenburg County website, MeckNC.gov, was also down because of downed power lines from the storm.

Elsewhere, more than 500 outages were reported in Avery County and about 400 customers had no power in Cabarrus County.
In Lancaster County, roughly 1,000 homes were in the dark overnight, but power was restored by 6 a.m.
The outages were caused after strong winds blew over trees onto power lines, crews told Channel 9.
By 7 a.m., most outages were restored.
