CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Principals in the Marvin Ridge school cluster are contacting families after a police officer received a threat to the schools, according to a news release Thursday.

A Charlotte police officer was given an index card that was found in a Charlotte restaurant. Written on the card in crayon were the words "Marvin Ridge," "boom" and the date May 12, 2013 and time 11 a.m.

While the message did not mention a particular school and gives a Sunday morning date and time, officials treated the message seriously.

"The safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority," the news release stated.

Staff members in each of the five schools in the Marvin Ridge area will maintain a high degree of awareness and check the building for unusual items, the news release stated. School officials are also working with local law enforcement to ensure all necessary steps are taken.

"Our ultimate goal is to catch those making any threats and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. Any student who is caught making threats will face up to an automatic 365 day suspension from school and will also face criminal charges," the news release stated.
