TikTok caregiver launches nonprofit to provide nationwide support

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Over two years ago, a family moment went viral on TikTok. It received more than 12 million views and launched a journey that would turn caregiving into connection.

Granny came to live with her daughter and son-in-law Dugan Meredith after being diagnosed with dementia in 2021. Today, she relies on family and in-home caregivers for nearly every part of her routine.

“She needs assistance with everything, even as far as walking,” Meredith said. “We have to make sure we’re right by her side.”

More than a million supporters across TikTok, Facebook and Instagram now follow the family’s journey. Meredith posts updates almost daily, sharing the light moments along with the difficult ones.

He says her condition has declined in recent years, taking away most of her ability to communicate. But before dementia, Granny was known for her big personality.

“When she walked into a room, she lit up the room,” Meredith said. “She was the center of attention always. Hair’s got to be done, nice earrings, Southern belle, as people would describe her.”

Watching that change has taken a toll on the entire family.

“As a caregiver, it feels like you’re on an island, like you’re completely alone,” he said.

But he’s discovered an entire online community facing the same struggles. Now, he’s starting a nonprofit also called Taking Care of Granny. The goal is to connect caregivers with financial assistance and everyday support.

“It’s okay to ask for help,” Meredith said. “Many times, you feel like there’s nobody there to help you, but I promise you, we’re going to do everything in our power to help as many caregivers as we can.”

The organization is accepting donations to help provide support services to caregivers across the country. Learn more at the nonprofit’s website here.

For now, Meredith asks that all donations be made payable to:
