Tillis said he's very focused on what he said while running in a heated race against Sen. Kay Hagan.

"I take this job very seriously, but more important than anything," Tillis said. "It's remembering the promises that you made and fulfilling them."

Leading up to the election, Tillis made it clear he'd challenge President Barack Obama on key issues including an attempt to repeal the controversial health care law.

"We've got to get the Affordable Care Act to a better place," Tillis said. "We've got to get back to a 40-hour work week. We've got to remove some of the mandates that are in the Affordable Care Act."

Tillis also said lawmakers must be focused on improving the economy and if so, he believes everything else will be easier to get done.

Those are challenges he's eager to solve and he knows many will be watching closely from both sides of the political aisle.

“I have a responsibility to govern,” Tillis said.  “I have a responsibility to make tough decisions and get the country back on track. That's what the people of North Carolina want. I think that's what the people of the nation want.”
