Deputies: Toddler OK after driving parents' SUV down driveway, across road

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A 2-year-old is safe after rolling her parents’ SUV down a driveway and onto its side in a ditch, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Sunday, deputies were called to the intersection of Celanese and Twin Lakes roads, where they found an SUV on its side in an embankment. They said they were told a toddler was in the car when it rolled down a nearby driveway and across Celanese Road in Rock Hill.

Deputies said they went into a nearby home that had its doors open and found the child’s parents sleeping, the police report says.

A witness told investigators he saw the SUV roll down the driveway and across the road, and then roll up on the curb and land on its side in the ditch, the sheriff’s office said.

Mike Gibson watched it happen.

"She didn't seem to be upset or anything," Gibson said. "She seemed to be just taking it all in."

A passerby helped the child out of the vehicle and waited with her until EMS arrived. She was not hurt.

The toddler’s parents told investigators the child must have taken the keys from a hook in the kitchen and somehow gotten into the vehicle, the report says.

DSS was notified and went to the scene to investigate, officials said.
