MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Matthews Board of Commissioners adopted new regulations on Sept. 14, governing the use of e-bikes, e-motos, and other electric-powered personal transportation devices.
The ordinance establishes clear classifications for various battery-powered devices as they become increasingly common across the town. Under the new rules, riders must follow specific operating guidelines when using roadways, sidewalks, greenways, and other public areas in Matthews.
The ordinance applies to e-bikes, personal conveyance vehicles like electric scooters, and devices legally categorized as mopeds or motorcycles.
Town officials plan to center initial efforts on education, public awareness, and voluntary compliance rather than immediate enforcement.
Local officials urge riders and parents to identify their devices’ specific classification, noting that similar models may have different operating restrictions depending on their design and maximum speed.
