CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UPDATE: An 18-month-old was also a passenger in the car that was rear-ended, according to police. All involved in the accident are expected to be OK. Police charged the driver who hit the other car with distracted driving.

An 11-year-old was injured after a vehicle rear-ended another car on Interstate 77, officials said.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon near Arrowood Road.

Medic said they transported four people injured in the accident to the hospital – three from rear-ended car and the driver from the other.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said a trailer of a tractor-trailer came unhinged and caused a backup. A car did not see the line of cars stopped ahead and plowed at highway speed into the rear of another vehicle.

An 11-year-old child, sitting in the backseat of the car that was rear-ended, was injured. Medic described the child's injuries as potentially life-threatening and the other people's injuries as serious.
