HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. — Federal investigators spent the day trying to find out what led up to a jarring train crash that sent 55 people to the hospital.

The train had left Charlotte before crashing into a tractor-trailer in Halifax County.

Channel 9 reporter Tina Terry asked investigators why Amtrak wasn't alerted about the danger on the tracks.

Cellphone video shows the Amtrak train, carrying 212 passengers, crash into that oversized flatbed truck Monday.

On Tuesday, Channel 9 learned the oversized flatbed trailer was carrying a modular building and heavy electrical equipment.

It had a special permit to travel through North Carolina and was being escorted by a highway trooper.

But the trooper said the truck driver had a hard time turning left over the railroad tracks and onto US 301 north.

A spokesman said the driver tried to back up, but didn't have enough time before the Amtrak train slammed into it.

Traffic that had backed up behind the tractor-trailer was asked to move back by the escorted trooper.

Channel 9 asked why the trooper didn't notify Amtrak that the truck was having problems turning over the tracks.

The spokesman said the truck had only been experiencing the problem for a few minutes, which was not enough time to notify Amtrak.

Officials said the estimated time based on the trooper’s interpretations was four to five minutes.

Tonight the federal rail road administration is reviewing train's event recorder, and interviewing the train crew, truck driver, and state trooper involved.

Channel 9 was told most of the 55 people taken to the hospital are out, which is something people who travel that route all the time were relieved to hear.

“It was a truck in the middle of the tracks people could have died it was pretty traumatizing,” said passenger Rachel Edquivel.

A spokesman for the highway patrol said no criminal charges will be filed in the case.
