CHARLOTTE — Charlotte’s annual PGA Tour event received confirmation this week that it will remain in golf’s top tier as part of the new Championship Series format debuting in 2028. Organizers of the Truist Championship said the designation will help the event sell more tickets and sponsorships, allowing them to reinvest in the fan experience.
The PGA Tour Championship Series will consist of 23 to 24 events annually, including the four major championships and annual events that boast higher payouts.
Specific dates for the Championship Series will be released later this year. Charlotte’s event has traditionally been played in May. Next year, when the current format will be in place for the last time, the Truist Championship is scheduled for May 10 through May 16.
Adam Sperling, executive director of the Truist Championship, said the Tour’s inclusion of Charlotte in the Championship Series “means we all will continue the trend that Quail Hollow has established of (going from) good to better to best. We are very excited about the future and all that it brings.”
Truist Financial replaced Wells Fargo as title sponsor in 2024, committing roughly $30 million annually.
