UAW: 115 Freightliner workers to be laid off at Gastonia parts plant

GASTONIA, N.C. — United Auto Workers confirmed to Channel 9 Tuesday morning that 115 employees at Freightliner's Gastonia parts plant will be laid off.

The layoffs will go into effect on August 12.

It's just the latest in a series of layoffs that Channel 9 has reported for months.

Freightliner said they made the cuts because of slumping sales, but claimed that the layoffs are temporary, and when sales pick up again the latest people cut will be the first called back to work.

In June, the company announced 600 layoffs at the Mount Holly plant, and another 200 at the Gastonia plant.

The head of the union expects those workers to return to the job as soon as January.
